Service / Safety-Emergency Disconnects

There are several ways to shut down the high voltage (outside of the battery) in hybrid and electric vehicles. In an article to be released next week, I will cover the various safety systems within the vehicle that “should” shut down the high voltage and thoroughly explain the various safety, emergency and service disconnects that can be used by rescuers to isolate the high voltage to the battery.

In this training I will show the various locations where we can expect to find service and safety / emergency shut offs that can be used to isolate the power. Although there are reference manuals, erg’s and programs like CRS that can help us quickly locate these components, I hope that this writing will help agencies without these resources.

Here are a few of the locations where we may find the Safety or Emergency cables / disconnects

 

Smart Car / 2012 – 2014

Smart 2012 - 2014Smart 2012 - 2014 (2)(Above) The Smart Car – In the first image I have circled the disconnect on the left side of the steering wheel. This is an uncommon location for a disconnect. In this case the orange plug is removed from the receptacle. 

Tesla Model S / 2012-2014

When using the cable type disconnect, be sure to double cut the cable to avoid accidental re-connection. 

BMW Active E – 2012 -2014

In this case the orange plug has a cap like cover that, when removed will isolate the power to the battery.

Buick Regal EAssist – 2011 – 2014

In this case the manufacturer is recommending that the emergency cable and the 12V battery cable both be cut for shutdown. As rescuers we know to always follow this guidance and cut the 12V battery cables as common practice at every incident.

Chevy Volt – 2010 – 2014

In this case the basket is removed from the center console and the Orange component is removed by depressing the bottom on the bottom of the side while the entire unit is lifted. 

Chevy Tahoe – 2008 – 2014

In this case the upholstery on the side of the back seat is stripped away to locate the disconnect. The Orange disconnect is then removed by lifting the handle up, down then out. This is a very common location for the disconnect on a SUV type of hybrid.
